VA combined rating calculator
VA does not add ratings. Each new rating applies to what efficiency remains after higher ratings.
How VA combined ratings work
- Sort disabilities from highest to lowest percentage.
- Start with the highest rating. Each next rating multiplies the remaining efficiency (100 − combined so far).
- Bilateral factor: mark only the paired disabilities. Those are combined first; if two or more are bilateral, add 10% of that subtotal, then combine with non-bilateral ratings before rounding.
- Round to the nearest 10% for the official combined rating.
Example: 50% then 30% → 50 + (50% × 30) = 65 → rounds to 70%.

Mark Bilateral only for paired extremities (or paired skeletal muscles) that belong together — e.g. left knee + right knee. A back rating is usually not bilateral.
